Amsterdam dwelling

An Amsterdam family had a choice: either move to a larger house or create more space within their existing home for themselves and their two children. The main problem lay in fact that the back part of the house was 1.40m lower than the front. The entrance is at the back and this leads on to the entrance hall, WC, bathroom, three bedrooms and kitchen and then out to the back garden. By diverting the gangway leading to the back garden and moving the parent’s bedroom, the kitchen became more central. In a previously unusable kitchen space of 1.20m an area was created in a cupboard providing an additional 20m2 storage/wine cellar space. The kitchen has a cooking island and cupboard/workspace surrounded by a dining table and permanent bench. The parent’s bedroom is compact and by using a matt glass sliding door provides an optimal view of the garden from both the bedroom and kitchen. Additional space has been created in the children’s bedrooms by the clever bed construction; 2 beds above each other separated by a wall. The youngest daughter has an intimate bedstead and the son a sturdy loft bed. For both children more space has been created for cupboards and their own play/study area.
